Evans was educated at the University of Birmingham, University College London and University College Hospital. From 1916 to 1918 he was in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He moved on to become Professor of Experimental Physiology in Leeds, 1918-1919. He joined the National Institute for Medical Research, 1919-1922. Evans was born in Birmingham in 1884. He was a pupil and collaborator of E.H. Starling, with whom he worked at University College, London, 1911-1916, and at the Royal Army Medical College at Millbank, 1916-1918, where Starling was in charge of the Anti-gas Department. After a brief stay at Leeds University as Professor of Experimental Physiology, he returned to London to work in the department of H.H.
